Severe weather can happen without warning. Do you know what to do when it does?

Alabama is the 24th most populous state in the nation; however, it ranks 9th for major disaster declarations. From tornadoes and severe thunderstorms to hurricanes, flooding, and other emergencies, disasters can occur with little warning. Preparing before an emergency
happens is one of the most effective ways to protect lives, reduce damage, and build stronger, more resilient communities. The Governor’s Office of Volunteer Services, in partnership with the Alabama Emergency Management Agency, Alabama State Department of Education, Alabama Independent School Association, Montgomery City/County EMA, FEMA, the National Weather Service, and United Ways of Alabama, invites Alabama high school students to get creative, spread the word, and help their communities Be Ready for severe weather.

The Alabama Youth Be Ready Video Contest challenges students in grades 9–12 to create an original video that educates others about severe weather safety and preparedness. The Alabama Youth Be Ready Video Contest is designed to remind the youth of Alabama that preparing for emergencies and disasters can keep families and communities safe. This is a time to focus on educating the public about severe weather safety and preparedness.

Entries start Tuesday, September 1, 2026. The deadline to submit an entry is Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at 5:00 PM CST.
